How Many Languages do you Speak in the Classroom?

Last fall there was a thread on CATESOL about using students’ native language, “L1”, in the classroom. The question was posed by a student preparing for her masters in TESOL. She wanted to know if it was a help or hindrance in class.
Most posters advised against it citing examples and experiences where students learned more slowly and waited for translation instead of attempting to understand without it.
Suggestions to facilitate learning in lower level classes included having bilingual dictionaries in different languages available. Using visuals, realia, mime, and TPR were of great assistance to many teachers.
In 15 years of teaching English to those who don’t have it as their native language, I’ve taught students who speak no less than 18 different languages (maybe more, I tend to lose count). I can’t keep up with learning that many languages. I would never translate for some students, but not others.
In a literacy class recently, I made an interesting observation. Students became more involved and open when I asked THEM to teach ME words and phrases in their native languages. They became very animated an interested, not only in my attempt at their own language, but in others’ languages as well. They saw their teacher in a different light; as a learner who makes mistakes and misinterpretations just like them.
